MAN’S BEST FRIEND #4

(Prompt: A simple sad sonnet)

Dogs are man’s best friend, the saying does go
A dog’s heart beats seven times faster than does ours
Aye it is true, as far as we all know
And so their lives are shorter so many hours
Each one filled with their boundless love for us
Limpid eyes that gaze with hearts full of love
Providing love, food, companionship thus
And a lifetime’s friendship goes hand in glove
Faithful and enthusiastic in all
Whether walking or resting at your side
Eating a meal or chasing a football
Devotion and joyfulness magnified
The rainbow bridge calls each loved one away
Heartsore – left behind; pain none can allay

DIDO MEETS MASEFIELD  #5

(Prompt: Villanelle and two pieces combined)

His boots no longer by my door
For the wild call of the running tide
As I slept I felt him go – returns no more.

My lover’s gone! At dawn he left offshore
Tis a clear call that may not be denied
His boots no longer by my door

The tune on his lips – his song no more
All I ask is a tall ship and a star to guide
As I slept I felt him go – returns no more.

I sing alone while I watch the ocean roar
To the gull’s way and the whale’s way I glide
His boots no longer by my door

I know that kiss will be my last evermore
A grey mist on the sea’s face does reside
As I slept I felt him go – returns no more.

No earthly ships will ever bring him ashore
With quiet sleep and sweet dream, the long trick nullified
His boots no longer by my door
As I slept I felt him go – returns no more.
