The Ritual

I awake and turn
Blindly reach for alarm
Groggy, I sit up,
And quick prayer, compose my head
Swing reluctant feet from bed

Into cold bathroom, cat watching every step
Water, wash, teeth and hair; Inhaler, gargle
Toilet, bathroom again, get dressed
socks, shoes and downstairs we go
Constant shadow moving quick and slow

Feed the cat, writhing through my legs
Clean her litter and water too
Into the kitchen to put on the kettle
But first again wash hands
Then tidy dishes, pots and pans

Lunch made and put away
Carry quick cup of tea upstairs
Lift last things and stuff in bag
Coat on, door open and out
ready for the rest of today? I doubt!
